The Welcome to America Project to hold its first-ever fundraising event, The Prom, on Saturday, April 21st, 2007.

The Welcome to America Project will host "The Prom," its first annual fundraising event, on Saturday, April 21st, 2007 at the parish hall of St. Maria Goretti Church in Scottsdale, Arizona. The event will be a night of dancing to fantastic 70s and 80s music, with multiple raffle prizes, a cash bar, and free food and entertainment. All proceeds will be used to furnish the homes of refugee families, newly resettled to the Phoenix area by the U.N. from war-torn and oppressed regions around the world.

Scottsdale, AZ (PRWeb) March 3, 2007 -- The Welcome to America Project will host "The Prom," its first annual fundraising event, on Saturday, April 21st, 2007 at the parish hall of St. Maria Goretti Church in Scottsdale. The event will be a night of dancing to fantastic 70s and 80s music, with multiple raffle prizes, a cash bar, and free food and entertainment. Open to adults 21 and over, admission tickets cost just $20 per person. Doors open at 8pm. Tickets can be purchased in advance by calling 602 820 3224 or at the door.

"We hatched the Prom idea after asking friends and volunteers what they would love to do at a fundraiser. They told us no more auctions, no casino nights -- they wanted an affordable night out with friends where they could listen and dance to 'old school' music. So we came up with the idea of having an adult prom," says Sue Michalowski, Board Member. "The response so far has been overwhelmingly enthusiastic. I've heard from friends coming with their whole office and a group of moms on a ladies night out."

Although not a formal dance for couples only, the WTAP Prom will feature a dance floor, dance contests, free dessert, dozens of high value raffle prizes, and the chance to win a vacation in Park City, Utah. The cash bar will serve wine and beer. Wearing vintage prom clothes is optional, but prizes will be awarded for Best Tux, Best Dress and Best Couple. "A king and queen will be crowned," says Michalowski. "The night will be full of fun, laughs, dancing and prizes. The best part: it's all to help a population in Phoenix that is truly in great need."

The night will raise money to provide furniture and essential household items to refugee families in the Phoenix area. In Arizona, The Welcome to America Project serves refugees who have been forced to flee their homes in war-torn or oppressed countries and have lived in refugee camps for several years. When the U.N. resettles them, they must often leave family members, including spouses and children, and all material possessions behind. They do not get to choose which country or city they will live in and many do not speak English.

The Welcome to America Project meets newly arrived refugees shortly after they move to Phoenix to determine what furniture and home essentials they need to turn their new accommodations into warm, comfortable, restorative homes. WTAP delivers these items twice a month, helping about 8-10 families per month from September to June.

"The Welcome to America Project is an all volunteer organization and our overhead is very low. But we do have costs for picking up, storing and delivering goods. We need money to pay for storage rental, truck and drivers' insurance and fees, and sometimes for basic supplies for refugee families," says Carolyn Manning, Founder and Director of WTAP. "We hope that our Prom will not only help us fund our operations for 2007, but also attract new volunteers and increase awareness about the situations new families face when they arrive here from refugee camps around the world."
