Washington, D.C. (PRWeb) March 28, 2007 -- The U.S. Department of Transportation (U.S. DOT) will host a two-day public meeting to present results from a new vehicle safety research initiative, the Integrated Vehicle Based Safety Systems (IVBSS) program, which got underway in late 2005. This program is one of the nine first-tier Intelligent Transportation System (ITS) research initiatives being sponsored by the Federal Highway Administration's (FHWA) Joint Program Office (JPO). The public meeting will be held from April 25-26, 2007 at the Marriott Eagle Crest Conference Center in Ypsilanti, Michigan. This meeting is co-organized by the Intelligent Transportation Society of America, U.S. Department of Transportation and the University of Michigan Transportation Research Institute.

One of the major goals of the IVBSS program is to work with industry to accelerate the introduction of integrated, vehicle-based, safety systems into the U.S. light vehicle and heavy commercial vehicle fleets. During this meeting, the U.S. DOT and IVBSS team members will summarize results from the first program year, highlight planned activities for the current year, and provide an overview of the planned field operational test. The meeting will include presentations on the light vehicle and heavy truck system development process, driver-vehicle interface development, as well as, the development of integrated system functional requirements, performance specifications and objective tests to verify system performance.

Representatives from the U.S. DOT will discuss verification testing and evaluation of the field operational test. There will be opportunities during the meeting for attendees to ask questions.

Pre-registration for this meeting is mandatory. Attendance will be limited due to space restrictions of the meeting room. Registration will be open through April 13, but may close early if attendance limits are met.
