Alphion Corporation Launches Dual-Band FTTx Amplifier

Princeton Junction, New Jersey, United States

Alphion Corporation, a leader in innovative solutions for photonic regeneration, amplification, signal conditioning, wavelength management, photonic routing, performance monitoring and passive optical networking (PON), announced today, the introduction of an innovative dual band semiconductor optical amplifier line. This product line is specifically designed to address amplification of FTTx networks. The DAOS (Dual-band Amplifier for O- and S-band), based on Alphion's proprietary QLight(R) photonic technology platform, is currently available in a 24-pin butterfly package. A small-form-factor 14-pin package will be available in 2Q07. Alphion will be introducing these new products at the 2007 OFC/NFOEC Conference and Exposition from March 27th to 29th in Anaheim, California (Booth #1525).

The QLight(R) DAOS amplifier is designed to amplify both the upstream 1310nm traffic and the downstream 1490nm traffic. This amplifier is well-suited for burst-mode signals and is available in two models: a downstream booster - upstream preamp (model B) and a dual-band inline amplifier (model I).

Chris Peterson, Alphion Vice President of Marketing, is confident about the impact of the new product line. "Our new dual-band SOA products leverage our QLight(R) photonic technology platform. These amplifiers address the needs of the next generation of FTTx networks by significantly increasing the link power budget of current GPON, EPON, and BPON architectures in the most cost-effective way. The increased power budget allows PON systems to reach farther, transmit faster, and connect to more end-users. Our DAOS products are changing the economics and the architectural paradigms of FTTx networks."

General sampling of the QLight(R) DAOS amplifiers has already started and production shipments will begin in mid-2007.

The QLight(R) platform is based on breakthroughs in monolithic integration on InP and advanced packaging technologies. Alphion owns rights to over 35 issued and pending patents related to design, fabrication and applications of photonic integrated circuits.
