BROOKLYN, NY (PRWeb) March 10, 2007 -- Art world Veteran, Howard Gross comes out of an intense period of creation to exhibit new sculptures and his drawings at Ch'i Contemporary Fine Art from April 16 - May 16th. Ch'i, located at 293 Grand St. between Havemeyer and Roebling Sts in the Williamsburg district of Brooklyn will dedicate its entire 1500 Sq-ft. exhibition space to Howard's show, " An Elusive Moment." In addition the gallery will showcase some of the "Closed Eye" series of photographs which made Howard Gross news in the 70's and again in the 90's. Howard along with gallery director, Tracy Causey-Jeffery will host an artist's reception for the exhibition on April 20th from 6 p.m.
Howard Gross
Howard Gross began his artistic career in Chicago after his MFA from the Art Institute of Chicago. His early works consisted of fluff, debris and decay imposed on familiar objects such as butter dishes, bicycles, boxes and furniture. One such sculpture-Heidi's Bicycle" is now in the collection of the Weatherspoon Art Museum.
Howard relocated to New York in the mid 70's and began exhibiting with OK Harris Gallery and then the Truman Gallery. At this time he began using photography as a means of expression. His first series was shot of cracks in sidewalks, roads and buildings in NY. Then he went on to the series for which he is renown - the "A Closed Eye Concept." This series depicted art world members such as Leo Castelli and Louise Bourgeois with their eyes closed. Howard updated the series 20 years later and exhibited the dual photographs of each individual in 1998. Since that time, he has shunned exhibiting to a large extend showing only once in 2000 at the Florence Lynch gallery his concept based "Notes on a String". He has however continued to draw and sculpture fervently.
An Elusive Moment?
Now in 2007, Howard Gross exhibits those drawings and sculptures for the first time in his exhibition entitled "An Elusive Moment" from April 16- May 16th at Ch'i Contemporary Fine Art. The drawings of which this exhibition is partially comprised span the periods of the 80's 90's and 2000's. They consist of minutely executed cells and lines which reference plant or insect life. The sculptures grew out of some of the drawings and mimic their cellular construction though in Howard's well - known "box" format.
Both the drawings and sculpture will be on display at Chi at the gallery's Williamsburg, Brooklyn, location of 293 Grand St. from April 16- May 16th and Howard will be on hand for the artist's reception on April 20th from 6 p.m. The public is invited to see these newest creations by Howard Gross alongside a selection from his "A Closed Eye Concept" series during gallery hours: Thurs.-Sun. 11:30 a.m. - 8 p.m., Mon. 9 a.m. - 5 p.m. or by appointment on Tues. or Wed.
