So what does a location scout do, anyway?
Location scouting and management are somewhat arcane but vital parts of production for feature films, television shows and commercials, print photo shoots, as well as an increasing number of projects straight to the Web.
This is a specialized niche driven by data and deadlines, specs and strategies, travel and technology. Such as: identifying and sizing up potential locations; photographing them; "selling" the location to the client or producers; knowing one's way around metro NYC; maintaining inventory, etc. Location management is the flip side of the coin that includes working with the Mayor's Office of Film (MOFTB), negotiating with owners/tenants; obtaining shooting permits; maps and directions; and securing production parking.
According to a Wikipedia article (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Location_scouting) to which Mr. Hobbs has contributed regularly, "Location Scouting is a process in the pre-production stage.... Once a need is realized for a scene that might not be suitable (for any of a plethora of reasons) for photography in a studio setting, a search is begun for a suitable place or "location" outside the studio."
Mark and Richard will describe every step. An attendee will enter as a novice, but leave with the beginning of expertise. Class materials will be provided.
