Renowned Fitness Expert Stresses the Importance of Physical Play at the Kids Fitness Challenge

LOS ANGELES, Calif. - Jan. 24, 2007 (SEND2PRESS NEWSWIRE) =- If John Abdo has his way 10,000 elementary school children are going to have a day they will never forget! The renowned fitness expert will be providing fun-filled lessons on physical play, that he hopes these kids will take to heart. The Fitness Hall of Fame inductee will be emceeing the Kids Fitness Challenge at the illustrious Rose Bowl, Saturday, January 27th. For Abdo, the opportunity to directly motivate youth on the importance of a healthy lifestyle is something he's passionate about.

"Our nation's children need help now," stressed the former Olympic trainer. "We must show kids through events such as this that exercise is fun. Physical play with their friends is something every child needs to do every day. That. combined with healthy eating habits, will stop the obesity epidemic now plaguing our children."

Abdo, spokesperson for the Fitness Challenge Foundation, who is sponsoring this event, stated some alarming statistics that every parent needs to be aware of. "In the state of California thirty-eight percent of the children ages nine to 11 are overweight or at a risk of becoming overweight. And close to 74 percent of youth are unfit and only 40 percent of teens meet minimum daily targets for physical activity," he said. "These numbers are comparable all over the country, and we know that poor nutrition and inactivity increase the risks of cardiovascular disease, type 2 diabetes, certain types of cancer and of course, obesity. But we can do something about it, and events such as this can have a very positive impact on helping kids realize that having a good time will improve their health."

15,000 kids, parents and teachers are expected to participate in the Kids Fitness Challenge, one of the largest kids-focused, non-competitive 5K events in state history. Held at the Rose Bowl in Pasadena, this event marks the only time in Rose Bowl history that a community event will start and finish on the field inside the bowl. The landmark event will rally Californians to eat healthy and be active to reduce childhood obesity and will feature a variety of notables.
