14-Year Hollywood veteran's new book slams the door on Tinsletown's favorite illusions.
Los Angeles, CA (PRWeb) January 20, 2007 -- Author D.L. White's first book "Acting in the Real World: The Film Professional's Guidebook to the Job of Acting" gives readers an un-blinking view into the little known world of the professional film and television actor.Mr. White, who has been working in the industry as an editor and commercial and music video director for close to 14 years, decided to write the no-holds-barred book after a particularly rough casting session. "I was amazed at how little these kids really knew about the realities of the job," he said of some of the hopefuls, "the lack of professionalism was astounding."
A graduate of a two-year professional acting program himself, D.L. White combined his years of practical, behind the scenes work with his newfound awareness of the acting subculture in Los Angeles. "There's a real disconnect in this industry when it comes to what is hype and what is really needed to do the job" he said, "these kids really believe they're just one step away from being discovered." What he refers to as the 'Lana Turner Syndrome' in the book, he remarked, "Sometimes, it's just downright disheartening to see."
"Acting in the Real World: The Film Professional's Guidebook to the Job of Acting" is in essence a practical, 'how-to' book that pointedly stays clear of the 'getting started' angle. "No one needs another book on how to get a headshot or find an agent" he said, "none of that stuff has anything to do with the job anyway." Covering everything from the rudiments of the job to the day-to-day life on set, to what he calls "the lifetime of temporary employment" the book provides an insight to an industry that's generally closed off to outsiders. "A lot of people won't like what I wrote in here" he said of tarnishing Hollywood's 'dreams come true' image, "but I'm not responsible for how they deal with the truth."
D.L. White will be appearing at various acting schools throughout the Los Angeles area to promote his new book, which is available online at: http://www.actorsconcentration.com
