Retired Navy Captain's Insightful Novel Explores the "Moral Waivers" Used in Enlistment

Constant Bearing - Decreasing Range by Skip Vogel is a gripping military novel about how the Navy was forced to admit social misfits into the service.

Spring Valley, MN (PRWeb) January 14, 2007 -- Constant Bearing - Decreasing Range: The Collision of Public Policy and National Defense by Skip Vogel explores the misguided efforts of social engineering that placed non-adaptable personnel into the Navy's ranks, adding an extra burden and responsibility on the shoulders of the Navy's commanders.

When President Lyndon Johnson hoped to elevate the lives of many disadvantaged young men by admitting them into the military by waiving former standards author Skip Vogel, a 20- year veteran of the military, saw firsthand how these boys' lives did not benefit, and were even worse because of it. Gradually, because of this policy, more and more social misfits and felons came into the military, argues Vogel, and these men often became the nation's worst enemy.

Now, in his gripping novel, Vogel explores the lives of the men who made this public policy, the lives of the men who were tasked with its execution, and the life of one high-risk sailor named Sam. Can the military make a sailor out of Sam without putting their dangerous mission in jeopardy?

Vogel's provocative book is sure to appeal to military people, historians and civilians alike. Thrillingly written and grippingly told, Constant Bearing-Decreasing Range is part social study, part romance and a totally unique page-turner.

"Vogel explains Navy terms and locales with a specificity that makes them accessible to anyone. His storytelling skills shine particularly brightly in his ability to handle character. No detail escapes his attention, every character, however minor, is treated with equal care, and few writers have managed to achieve it; among contemporary writers, only a John Irving, or a Stephen King, or a Kurt Vonnegut, can accomplish such a task."--New York Times best-selling author, Ellen Tanner Marsh
