ActiveCaptain's wiki-style interface has attracted over 1,000 marine cruisers to logon and add information to the new online visual database. Its focus on content, communications and community make it a great place to visually find marinas, anchorages, and local knowledge on maps and satellite images.

Castine, Maine (PRWeb) February 12, 2007 -- According to Jeffrey Siegel, author of ActiveCaptain (www.activecaptain.com), one of the best things about cruising is the people he meets. Hearing stories from fellow cruisers is not only entertaining, one learns from the experiences and knowledge of others who have gone before.

Any cruiser who has decided to leave the comfort of their homeport knows that the first thing they do when pulling into a new port is to seek out the knowledge of fellow cruisers. Where's the cheap fuel, the good restaurant, or the closest place to buy some milk? What destinations shouldn't be missed? Or what ones should be avoided?

While traditional guidebooks can be useful, they are out of date the moment they reach the bookracks. Moreover, they will never reveal the overpriced marina or the boatyard to avoid. ActiveCaptain grew out of the desire of Jeff and his wife Karen, to have access to this sort of information no matter where their cruising took them.

ActiveCaptain is a place where the cruising community can find marinas, anchorages, and local knowledge visually on worldwide maps. Released just last month, ActiveCaptain added over 1,000 registered users and over 13,000 user updates in the first few weeks. The first release provided listings of 8,000 marina markers in the United States. Anchorage makers are now available and “local knowledge” markers will be available shortly.

ActiveCaptain's wiki-style database (www.activecaptain.com) allows users to make additions, changes, and deletions to the information. Markers are drawn on maps and satellite images to visually identify them. Once selected, information about that marker is displayed. There is also an extensive capability for reviewing and rating facilities, anchorages or destinations.

ActiveCaptain is about sharing knowledge among the community of cruisers. Access is free for anyone.
The framework allows all members of the cruising community to share their knowledge and experience. It depends on cruisers helping cruisers.
