We have thousands of people developing into our architecture today. All of the handsets we sell are Java-equipped. Who doesn't know how to develop into Java, right? If you want to buy a handset on our network without a contract, fine. Just pay retail price for the handset. Right? The only reason we make people sign a contract is if we're subsidizing it heavily. So I would suggest to you we feel like we're a very open network and I think you'll see that continue to open up."
Earlier this week, major industry company Verizon announced its plan to open its network. AT&T and Verizon's decision will open the access door for non-phone devices like gaming systems or cameras for the first time. "This is huge news for us," says Michaels. "Now we can go after Verizon and AT&T customers because they are opening their network and allows Hop-on to sell new models of GSM and CDMA technologies to the US and European Markets subscribers as potential customers.
Verizon's earlier announcement and now AT&T announcement comes just weeks after Google unveiled its plans to release its own open mobile platforms, an Android Linux-based device operating system and its Open Handset Alliance, a conglomeration of over 30 companies looking to develop lower cost, open mobile devices. Verizon's, AT&T and Google's new strategies signal a shift in open thinking that other communications companies are bound to follow.
