Cook County Treasurer Maria Pappas honored John P. "Jack" Glunz as "Man of the Year" for his commitment to business and family as president of Lincolnwood,Ill-based Louis Glunz Beer, Inc., the nation's oldest beer distributor founded in Chicago by Louis Glunz in 1888. Chicago, IL (PRWEB) April 30, 2007 -- Cook County Treasurer Maria Pappas recently honored John P. "Jack" Glunz as "Man of the Year" for his commitment to business and family as president of Louis Glunz Beer, Inc. The firm began in 1879 when Louis Glunz arrived in Chicago from Germany. He studied brewery operations and opened his own business in 1888. Today, 119-year-old Louis Glunz Beer is the nation's oldest beer distributor.

"The Glunz story is that of a family devoted to a business that grew with Chicago because generations of family members made it so," Pappas said. "Jack Glunz has applied innovative business practices and strategies to Glunz Beer and made sure that his family was involved."

Pappas made the presentation last Wednesday at a reception in her office in the Cook County Building, 118 N. Clark Street, in Chicago. Glunz family members and friends and associates attended, including Ald. Eugene C. Schulter (47th Ward) and Erich Himmel, president of the United German-American Societies of Greater Chicago.

Glunz said the love and support of his wife of 49 years, Patricia, and his seven children and grandchildren enabled him to give back to the industry and community.

The Reverend George Klein of St. Philip the Apostle in Northfield, Ill., offered the invocation for the reception, which featured German fare donated by the Chicago Brauhaus and Paulina Meat Market. Patricia Glunz distributed sugar maple tree saplings to the guests to celebrate Arbor Day.

Glunz has served as president of the board of directors of the Associated Beer Distributors of Illinois and the Chicago Beer Wholesalers Association; on the Advisory Council of the Joseph Schlitz Brewing Company and the Stroh Brewing Company; and as board president of Alexian Brothers Hospital, St. Mary of Nazareth Hospital, and Regina Dominican High School.

He is a 1957 graduate of Loras College in Dubuque, Ia.

Named Prince of the Rheinischer Verein in 2000 (his wife was Princess), Glunz has been honored by the Chicago Beer Wholesalers Association and received the Order of Knighthood of the Golden Fleece in Belgium. Mayor Richard M. Daley recognized his contributions to the German-American community in 2004, and the Loyola Family Business Center gave him the Century Award for Glunz Family Enterprises in 2005.

Glunz Beer is family-owned and operated by Jack Glunz with day-to-day operations led by five of his seven children as members of the fourth generation. Glunz Beer features an extensive portfolio of more than 500 micro, specialty and imported beers from 69 breweries worldwide, and is the premier distributor to restaurants, bars, liquor and grocery stores throughout Chicago-land. The company is dedicated to quality service and to educating customers and the public about beer tastes and trends.
