St George's Day Bank Holiday Takes Shape at Interflora.co.uk

In recent years there's been a revival in the celebration of St George's Day with many brewers and public houses campaigning for the day to become a Bank Holiday with celebrations along the same lines as St Patrick's Day.

(PRWEB) April 19, 2007 -- Despite him being England's patron saint for almost the last 600 years, there's no official Bank Holiday to mark St. George's Day and very little is actually known about the real St George and why we'll be celebrating him on April 23rd.

Although Interflora cannot enact a Bank Holiday for the celebration of St George's Day, they have put together a selection of their favourite gifts; including bouquets of roses, the flower traditionally worn as a buttonhole on St. George's Day, plus a fine selection of gourmet gifts ideal for any celebration.

Roses are England's national flower, so on St George's Day it is traditional to wear a red rose in the button hole. The rose was adopted around the time of the War of the Roses between the houses of Lancaster and York and later the red and white roses were combined to make the Tudor rose (a red rose with a white centre) by Henry VII when he married Elizabeth of York. How St George became associated with the slaying of a dragon and the rescuing of an innocent maiden from death we will probably never know for sure, but his association with brave acts and the triumph of good over evil has existed since medieval times and he is known throughout the world as the dragon-slaying patron saint of England.
