San Francisco, CA (PRWeb) April 1, 2007 -- Cinequest Film Festival awarded Academy of Art University alumni Vince Navarro with "Best Short" in the Audience Award category. Navarro's film "Gordo" captures the joys and struggle of a Mexican immigrant trying to realize the American Dream.
The film, written and directed by Navarro, captured the audience's vote through his title character "Gordo". "The audience found themselves cheering for Gordo, a hardworking, and gifted taco maker from Mexico who travels to America where he hopes to establish a successful Mexican restaurant" says Navarro. "I think people really connected with Gordo because he represents the little guy fighting "the man". Everyone at some point or another has had to deal with this in their own life. The film delves into the importance of family and the realization that they will always be there for you. When the film culminates Gordo, along with the viewer, realize this as well."
The Cinequest Film Festival was created to "empower the maverick" by producing an annual film festival and helping filmmakers distribute their work. This year, Cinequest had a record-breaking number of submissions, 1,850 (features and shorts) competed for slots at this prestigious festival. Included in this number were over 100 first-time, emerging film artists, representing 34 countries across the globe.
In addition to the Cinequest award "Gordo" has received several other awards including "Best Student Short" at the San Luis Obispo Film Festival and "Best International Short" at the Beverly Hills Hi-Def Film Festival.
Vince Navarro graduated with a Master of Fine Arts in Motion Pictures and Television from the Academy of Art University
Film School and currently works in the video solutions department of Biocompare, as Associate Producer of Viral Media.
