Hi-Fi Cables Delay Iraq Spending Bill

Senate Republicans added a new provision to the Iraq spending bill that calls for $1.3 billion in funding to upgrade military communications equipment using technology developed by Hi-Fi cable company Pear Cable, but Democrats say this unnecessary spending measure will only further delay the critical legislation.

Washington, D.C. (PRWeb) April 1, 2007 -- Senate Republicans added a new provision to the Iraq spending bill that calls for $1.3 billion in funding to upgrade military communications equipment using technology developed by Hi-Fi cable company Pear Cable, but Democrats say this unnecessary spending measure will only further delay the critical legislation.

"Newly developed Hi-Fi audio cable technology has been identified by our Generals in the field as being capable of offering US ground troops a significant advantage in urban combat situations. It took us longer to solidify the need for these cables than we had initially hoped, but now that we fully understand their importance, we will not back down on this issue," said Minority Leader Mitch McConnell, R-Ky.

Senate Republicans adopted the new spending measure during closed-door meetings on Saturday in Washington. Presidential aide Karl Rove who has recently been embroiled in scandal over eight U.S. Justice firings, was seen leaving the secretive meetings by an eye-witness who requested to remain anonymous, raising speculation of improper Presidential influence over the Congressional legislation.

House Majority leader Nancy Pelosi wrote a letter to President Bush saying, "Unfortunately you have made it clear that breaking the Constitutionally mandated separation of powers between two branches of government is not enough for you. You must now try to control all three by secretly influencing Congress."

Asked to comment on the validity of the need for $1.3 billion worth of military cables, Pear Cable Audio Cables CEO Adam Blake had the following to say: "We have completed Phase III of our D.A.R.P.A. project, testing the effects of rewiring military communication equipment with our high fidelity cable. The results show, and D.A.R.P.A. confirms, that up to 8 percent of all casualties in Iraq would have been preventable if audio communications had been clearer."

General David Petraeus echoed comments made by Pear Cable saying, "We are seeing the biggest improvements in clarity when head gear is re-wired. We have tested and measured a 26.5 percent decrease in combat soldiers responding with the word: 'What'."

But for the time being, purported sound quality improvements seemed unlikely to get past either the House or the Senate, both controlled by wary Democrats calling the measure unnecessary at best, and possibly scandalous. With no end in sight to the bitter dispute over the emergency war-funding bill, the call for clearer audio for combat troops sounded like a faint whisper.
