Newmont Mining Corporation Selects ESRI for Global GIS Enterprise License, Worldwide GIS Capabilities Enabled Through Portal Technology and Integrated Systems

Redlands, California, United States

Newmont Mining Corporation recently selected ESRI as its enterprise geographic information system (GIS) software provider. Newmont Mining is the second largest gold producer in the world, with operations on five continents. The global enterprise license agreement will enable Newmont Mining to deploy the full suite of ArcGIS products in an open, scalable, and standards-based GIS architecture that will integrate with and leverage existing Newmont Mining information technology (IT) resources.

The ESRI global enterprise license replaces Newmont Mining's previous GIS, offering greater opportunity for more integrated and robust applications. ESRI products will allow the company to create distributed data repositories, which will replicate data from central servers. The company's data will be accessed via an intranet portal by a wide variety of employees from GIS professionals to casual users.

Matthew Bidwell, Newmont's manager of Worldwide GIS, says, "Our global enterprise license agreement with ESRI will enable us to organize our data in one consistent standardized architecture. Our geologists will be able to more easily and quickly locate the data they need. The enterprise license agreement makes it easy to implement GIS throughout Newmont. Our offices no longer need to be concerned with negotiating for and distributing GIS software. This is huge for us. We do not have to worry about writing purchase requests each time we hire a new geologist."

"This global license is significant because it demonstrates the ability of GIS technology to make vast amounts of data available to users in distant lands," says Jack Dangermond, president of ESRI. "It is exciting to work with Newmont Mining Corporation in implementing its GIS, which will improve its efficiency and productivity at a worldwide level."
