covers the period 1945-1995: exactly fifty years of modern, post-war
modernity with the Berlin Wall, its erection, its fall in 1989, and all
its consequences, as a literary centre of gravity.
Andreas Wakker (1958), www.andreaswakker.nl, studied physics and worked
from 1987 tot 2000 at Shell, where he experienced a "transition" from a
professional Rhineland type culture to a new spin and make-belief
Anglo-Saxon market mentality, all orchestrated by Americans. His outrage
about the new nonsense was oxygen for the spark under Winterreise, which
became his birth certificate as a writer. Something of this original
spark can still be found back at the end of the novel, which is set
within the walls of the multinational company Well, and where Thomas
Traub faces his "Untergang" to disappear from a world in which
everything that is perfect and inspiring evaporates as soon as it
touches reality. Andreas Wakker writes columns en essays about societal
subjects; he also writes texts for song and theatre. At the moment he is
writing a novel about disturbing cultural develop-ments in modern
Europe. Andreas Wakker is a fervent choir singer and regularly performs
songs from Schubert's Winterreise.
