"We have created a suite of online resources that lawyers can use to supplement, or even supplant, their own library," says David Whelan, the Hamilton County Law Librarian. "These types of electronic treatises are key to good legal research. They round out our offering of case law, law journals, and current legal news."
Solo lawyers and small firms can greatly extend the reach of their own legal collections using the Cincinnati Law Library. By joining the Law Library, they can access resources that on their own would be quite expensive. "The cost of legal publications continues to skyrocket, whether they are in print or online," says Whelan, "and an organization like the Law Library can enable lawyers to get access to the best information without having to invest in expensive materials."
The Aspen / LOISLaw treatises provide information that can speed up legal research. Unlike case law, which is sometimes specific to a particular set of facts, these treatises talk about what the law is and provide supporting documents, like forms, that can help lawyers and business professionals learn more about the law without having to resort to reading case opinions.
Whelan notes that small business professionals can benefit as much, perhaps more, than lawyers. "Our collection of print and electronic materials is extensive and eliminates the need for a small business to buy books or access to databases which they might only use once or twice a year," says Whelan. Small business owners, human resource managers, and others can find the latest legal information in a variety of relevant areas.
The Cincinnati Law Library Association has been serving the legal profession of Hamilton County since 1834. It is open from 8 to 4:30, Monday through Friday, on the 6th floor of the Hamilton County Courthouse. Law Library members can access its electronic resources 24 hours a day.
