Denver, United States
Plasmon (LSE: PLM), a market leader in professional archival storage solutions, has announced that it has achieved major engineering milestones in the development of second generation 60GB UDO (Ultra Density Optical).
Plasmon's research and development facilities in Colorado Springs, USA and Cambridge, UK have successfully completed first phase product development demonstrating full specification 60GB media capacity and 12 MB/sec maximum sustained read performance.
Building on the market and technical success of first generation 30GB UDO released 1Q04, second generation UDO will double media capacity and increase read and write performance by 50 percent. Higher resolution 0.85 NA (Numerical Aperture) blue laser optics in combination with increased media density and an enhanced Optical Mechanical Assembly (OMA) manufactured for Plasmon by Konica Minolta will deliver unmatched optical storage capacity and performance.
"The development of 60GB UDO is meeting all of our engineering objectives. As with first generation UDO, we made a clear design decision to implement well-understood and commercially proven technology components," explained Nigel Street, Plasmon's CEO. "This philosophy not only enables us to meet our development schedules, but is also delivering major product benefits.
Plasmon has a reputation for reliable professional solutions and we are very confident that 60GB UDO will meet the high standard expected by our customers."
Available with both USB and SCSI interfaces, the first shipment of pre-release drives for integration and testing will be provided to Plasmon's software and OEM partners before the end of 2006. Full commercial product availability for 60GB second generation UDO is scheduled for April 2007. As with first generation UDO, 60GB UDO will be available in three media formats: Rewritable, True Write Once and Compliant Write Once. The new media will be manufactured using the existing production facilities of Plasmon in the UK and Mitsubishi(R) Kagaku Media (MKM) in Japan.
UDO has a well-defined development roadmap that began with 30GB and is growing to 60GB, 120GB and 240GB media capacities. Plasmon's commitment to providing backward read compatibility for all future product generations is a key attribute for thousands of organizations that depend on UDO for the long-term storage of their data.
With a low cost drive upgrade, existing G-Series library customers can continue to access older data written on first generation media while transitioning to the higher capacity 60GB media.
This mixed media support capability allows customers to leverage the longevity and authenticity of UDO in a very sustainable and cost-effective data archive.
