My Life as a Cautionary Tale

Los Angeles (PRWEB) May 3, 2006 -- CA Author/ poet lily (pseudonym for Lillian Powers) grew up in Compton, California and began writing songs, short stories and poems at the age of 10. A straight "A" student turned high-school dropout, lily definitely has her share of stories to tell. Her first published work "girl Child (The Transition – In Poetic Form)" has readers raving about its candid message. "girl Child" puts into poetic verse the trials and triumphs of the journey into womanhood. Its poetry is raw, truthful and more importantly – valid. lily has most recently found her voice teaching youths the power of self-expression through writing. "I have always been "different". Whether it was my dark skin, short kinky hair, religious beliefs or the fact that I actually liked school, I always felt like I was weird - an outcast. In writing I found my refuge. I realized that instead of being weird, I was unique and I learned to be comfortable with who I am. One of the reasons I like hosting the writing workshops is that learning to express myself through writing aided me in many ways to make the transition from self-hate to self-discovery and acceptance. My hope to pass on this tool to children and young adults who may otherwise feel that they do not have an outlet or a voice," says the author.

In 2001 lily started the online aromatherapy company Mama Incense with the goal of earning enough money to self-publish her first book. In late 2004 lily went a step further and formed Mama Incense Publishing and published her first collection of poetry entitled "girl Child (The Transition – In Poetic Form)". Lily continues to write and assist other writers by publishing inspirational articles and hosting workshops that pass along useful book industry information and tips to fellow aspiring authors. "It is very important to have a dream, to transform that dream into a goal and then take the steps to make that goal a reality in spite of the roadblocks that get in the way. I hope that my story of growth and triumph as told in "girl Child" will help others who feel out of place to see that they are not alone. Being different and unique are not necessarily bad things. -"girl Child (The Transition – In Poetic Form)" will be featured at the 2006 Book Expo America conference in Washington, DC (May 19-21) and the Librarians of Color conference in Dallas, TX (Oct 11-15).

-lily hosts Poetry/ Self Expression workshops for children within the Los Angeles County Public Library System and participates in panel writers workshops for adults.
