ImageTerm from Tangent Systems Image-enables Legacy Applications: Preserves Investment in Existing Host Platform

Hoffman Estates, IL (PRWEB) May 3, 2006 -- Tangent Systems®, an established provider of high-speed document processing and imaging software, today announced the availability of ImageTerm, a new product used to image-enable existing, non-image mainframe applications. ImageTerm automatically works in parallel with a host application to display images from any compatible repository, including Tangent's DocuTran® document processing platform, or any archive that provides suitable API or service-based access to retrieve images.

ImageTerm is suitable for data entry and a myriad of other applications, such as customer service. "Many companies have significant investments in legacy data entry systems, often with complex validations, business rules, and workflows. ImageTerm avoids the cost and risk of re-creating those rules on a new platform," said Lisa Ellingwood, Vice President of Sales, Tangent Systems. "A very modest investment can result in substantial increases in productivity and accuracy."

"We have long provided bi-directional screen scraping between terminal sessions and our flagship DocuTran product, so we have considerable expertise in this area," said Steve Mack, President of Tangent Systems. "But our DocuTran data entry system was always in control."

"When complex or dynamic business logic already exists, has been well tested and does the job, it makes a lot of sense to leverage that existing investment and concentrate on ways to improve productivity," Mack continued. "With ImageTerm we're using our expertise to provide a boost in efficiency by image enabling what was previously a paper-based data entry system. The existing application remains in control of the process and ImageTerm serves up the needed images on demand."

Mack also notes that ImageTerm's client-server architecture provides fast and reliable image retrieval. "The client has a small footprint and is easy to install and use. The server component employs a robust architecture combining a Web Services interface and a database back-end," said Mack.

ImageTerm includes security features such as session authentication and SSL encryption. "It is suitable for both in-house data entry and remote workers since its traffic can easily pass through corporate and home-user firewalls," said Mack. No web browser is required.

In addition, ImageTerm has the ability to serve images from multiple sources. This is typically used to enable retrieval from a fast near-term repository whenever possible, but automatically fail-over as necessary to retrieve from a long-term image archive. In certain environments, this two-tiered approach maximizes both retrieval reliability and performance.

ImageTerm includes image manipulation, such as zoom and pan. These manipulations may be performed directly within the host terminal emulation session using hot keys. With this seamless integration, the operator never needs to toggle between applications or use a mouse, enabling true heads-down image data entry.

Optionally, ImageTerm also logs operator keystrokes, and stores this information in a SQL database. This may be used to track or reward operator productivity, or for security audits.

ImageTerm is compatible with various third-party Windows-based software clients used to emulate 3270, 5250, and other types of terminals. It is also compatible with many Windows clients that provide a GUI front-end to mainframe and mid-range systems, even ones that were internally developed.
