LAEDC Launches "Not In My Backyard" Education Campaign

LOS ANGELES (PRWEB) May 22, 2006 -- Southern California residents will soon learn about issues in their own backyard while driving down the freeway thanks to a brand new educational program supported by the Los Angeles County Economic Development Corporation (LAEDC).

It's called "Our Backyard" and will air several times a day on KABC 790 AM, both on radio and streaming live audio on KABC.com. MP3 audio versions will be posted on the Internet for playback anytime.

"There are roughly 50,000 more people being added to the Golden State each month, and about half of them, or 25,000, are coming to live in Southern California," said Bill Allen, LAEDC president and CEO. "Though many Californians understand the benefits of such growth, many do not want it to occur in their own backyard. We hope our new campaign can help inform a more constructive dialogue as our communities debate options to deal with California's growth."

Spearheading the announcements, sponsored by the Building Industry Association - Los Angles/Ventura, will be the Senior Vice President of Public Policy and Consulting for the LAEDC, Wally Baker.

"When the Los Angeles and Long Beach Ports were shut down several years ago for a 10-day labor dispute, the LAEDC was the only agency providing information about the economic impact on every congressional district in the country," said Baker. "We realized then as we do now that it is critical to educate the public on issues right in their own backyard, from housing supply and goods movement to urban planning and business growth."

The program will explore the topics that polls show Californians are most concerned about, including, traffic, housing and the environment.

"Land availability in the urbanized areas of Southern California has become constrained, while there is growing unhappiness with sprawl into rural areas," noted Baker. "Resolving these issues points to re-use of land as well as more density; yet, density is four-letter word in some parts of the region. We hope these spots can help demystify concepts like density." The program begins airing Monday, May 22nd on KABC Talk Radio AM 790.
