Each year, the Flea has grown. Vendors like Junonia, Big On Batik, and Making It Big generously contribute brand new garments. And countless people clean out their closets, donating suits, jeans, coats, dresses, sweaters, even ballgowns. Labels like Elisabeth, Lane Bryant, Jones NY... Shoppers flock to the Flea for the value, the fashion and the fun-- last year's Flea Market was attended by women visiting from Philadelphia, Boston, Washington DC, and even Las Vegas-- the event draws attendees from as far away as San Francisco, California!
"Half my wardrobe is from the Flea -- there are dozens of outfits that I cherish, and none of them cost more than $10," said Holly Hessinger, size 26, Flea organizer and attendee 2005. "The quality and value are astonishing. The fact of the matter is you feel even better when you look fabulous in something that was such a great bargain!"
An incredible crew -- literally dozens of volunteers -- comes together to make the Flea happen. In turn, that process generates real community. Finally plus-size women have a chance to shop til they drop, and have fun doing it together. Stuff goes in the dressing room in one gal's hands, but she'll offer it up to another woman, gleefully saying 'This doesn't work on me, but i think it'll be fabulous on you!' The Flea is more than fashion or even style-- it's about celebration, self-acceptance and bonding.
This year's Flea Market takes place from 12 noon-8:30pm, on Saturday July 8th and from 11am-5pm on Sunday July 9th, at the LGBT Community Center, located at 208 West 13th St, between 7th and Greenwich Avenues. The Fat Girl Flea Market is a fundraising event for the annual conference of NOLOSE: The Revolution Just Got Bigger.
