Run Peru and the Agricultural Bureau of Yauli, farming communities from
several Peruvian highland regions, including Jauja, Concepcion, Tarma,
Satipo, Chanchamayo and Pasco, were able to participate in the Junin
region's eighth annual High Andes Agricultural Fair. Held April 19 - 23,
the event brought together farming communities from outlying regions to
compare the best in regional crops, livestock, farming practices and
handicrafts. The fair was held in the Santa Rose de Sacco district in
the Junin Region.
"This event is recognized by the Regional Bureau of Agriculture of Junin
as one of the best and biggest of its kind in the country," explained
Dr. Juan Carlos Huyhua, general manager of Doe Run Peru. "Since the
first fair in 1999, the event has grown in success - both in terms of
participation and variety - and this year, it expanded to include more
than 100 individual producers and farming communities. We're pleased to
sponsor this event and proud to see the communities embrace and enhance
the region's sustainable agricultural development."
The Agricultural Fair provides both social and educational opportunities
for participants and visitors. Exhibitors compete for awards for top
livestock including prize sheep, cattle, llamas, alpaca and other
animals, as well as for agriculture crops. The event also offers farmers
the opportunity to meet potential buyers for their produce and livestock
and the opportunity to exchange experiences and ideas, and to evaluate
the genetic improvement of livestock and crops.
Over the years, Doe Run Peru has helped support the introduction of
superior breeds of cattle, sheep and alpacas, along with improved
breeding of smaller animals and the introduction of cultivated grass and
the handling of natural prairies. Additionally, technical training
provided to farmers by top professionals from the National Agricultural
University-La Molina and other centers of study in the Central Sierra
has improved feeding and livestock management programs at the local
level.
According to Huyhua, the Agricultural Fair provides concrete evidence
that the regional economy is not solely dependent on mining, and that
mining and agriculture can coexist harmoniously and productively.
In recognition of the Fair's size and success, the Regional Bureau of
Agriculture of Junin, included this year's event in the National
Calendar of Agricultural Fairs. The ninth annual High Andes Agricultural
Fair is scheduled for April 2007.
