Corrigent Systems, a leading provider of packet transport solutions for next-generation transport networks, has announced the availability of a new Fibre Channel (FC) interface card, now available on the CM-100 product line. Corrigent's new module addresses the requirements of large enterprise customers and financial institutions to extend their storage area network (SAN) capabilities across the public network.
Fibre Channel has become the predominant technology for storage network applications worldwide. During recent years applications such as SAN extension for disaster recovery and business continuity have become a prominent business opportunity for network service providers. According to Gartner Group's forecast for Storage Network Infrastructure, this market is forecast to grow at a 21% CAGR to $4.9 billion by 2008.
In order to meet the intrinsic service requirements that characterize Fibre Channel-based applications, such as transparency and low latency, Corrigent Systems and KDDI R&D Labs have successfully tested a new mechanism for encapsulating and transporting Fibre Channel frames over an MPLS-enabled packet transport network.
Corrigent's 4-port SFP-based Fibre Channel module supports transmission rates of 1 Gbits/s and 2 Gbits/s, and can transparently connect to N, F and E ports in a standard Fibre Channel switch.
This module relies on Fibre Channel over MPLS technology offering the following benefits:
-- Transparent emulation of a FC link between two FC ports
-- Reliable transport through selective retransmission
-- Low overhead for efficient bandwidth allocation
-- Traffic engineering of emulated FC links over the packet transport network
-- Security through port-mode encapsulation of FC frames
Testing of Corrigent's Fibre Channel module was conducted using the Brocade 3850 switch. Brocade is a leading supplier of Fibre Channel switches and is located in San Jose, CA.
The Fibre Channel module in Corrigent's CM-100 provides carriers with the opportunity to converge existing transport infrastructure and simultaneously offer Fibre Channel and other types of packet services such as Carrier Ethernet, without negatively affecting the quality of service, bandwidth efficiency or revenue associated with existing customers and applications.
