Chicago Musician Receives Top Recognition in 13th Annual Billboard World Songwriting Contest

Chicago, IL (PRWEB) April 26, 2006 -- Katherine Schell, a Chicago-based singer/songwriter/pianist received five Honorable Mention distinctions in the pop category of the 13th Annual Billboard World Songwriting Contest. The five songs – including Imagineer, Come to Me, Paced, Next Holiday and Emptier Streets – are all from Schell's debut CD, "Emptier Streets," which was released last month.

The Billboard World Songwriting Contest annually recognizes songwriters who demonstrate exceptional lyrics, composition, melody and commercial appeal. The competition, which attracts thousands of songwriters from around the world, also provides a way for songwriters to gain exposure in the music industry. The contest is judged by industry insiders consisting of acclaimed musicians, songwriters, booking agents and A&R representatives.

"I am honored that my music has been recognized in such a prestigious competition," said Schell. "When I first penned these songs six years ago, I did it for myself. I was struggling to deal with a lot of issues and writing was my one escape from the world. I feel truly blessed to be able to share these lyrics, which are essentially short stories in my life."

Schell, who played piano since kindergarten, turned to writing while in high school to help cope with the news that her younger brother was diagnosed with leukemia. The result was "Emptier Streets," a compilation of life experiences with a soulful, eclectic style that expresses anguish, hope, dreams and fears. Her lyrics, with lines like "Don't worry darling, I'll hold you through it all" and "I would fight for you," are inspirational, straight-from-the-heart and full of meaning.

The Billboard World Songwriting Contest is not the first time Schell has been recognized for her outstanding lyrics. She is also the recipient of the 2005 International Songwriting of the Year Award in the adult contemporary category benefiting VH1 Save The Music.

"Emptier Streets," which features the five awarded songs, is available for purchase at select Tower Records and Best Buy stores nationwide. The full-length album is also available on iTunes. For more information on Katherine Schell, visit her website at www.katherineschell.com.
