INDIA HAS EMERGED AS ONE OF THE TEN FASTEST GROWING ECONOMIES IN THE WORLD : MANOHAR JOSHI

New Delhi~ June 30, 2001

The Union Minister for Heavy Industries and Public Enterprises Shri Manohar Joshi has said that India has emerged as one of the ten fastest growing economies of the world. While delivering his speech at the Business Conference organised by Brihan Maharashtra Mandal in Calgary Canada yesterday the Minister said that it is heartening that BMM established in 1981 has been consistently making efforts in organising the Marathi speaking Indian communities to keep up its ethnic and cultural heritage while contributing the development of North-American countries where they have settled.

Though being thousands of miles away from India the Mandal has not severed route with the motherland. BMM has so far organised Eight Conventions and he still carries the fond memories of participation in the Seventh Convention at Huston in 1995. The Minister said that India embarked upon a programme of wide-ranging reforms in the year 1991 seeking to make the Indian economy more market oriented open and free from avoidable controls. He said that we had been achieving a growth of around 3.5 per cent for about forty years and we have now moved into six per cent growth rate during the last decade after the liberalization process was started. He said that we expect reach a level of growth of about 7 to 8 per cent in the next five years. The Minister said that achievement of such a growth target will depend not only competitiveness but also on fresh investments.
