COMMERCIAL LAUNCH OF CELLULAR MOBILE SERVICES FOR CALCUTTA FROM DECEMBER 2001

The Minister of State for Communications Shri Tapan Sikdar today held a meeting with the Members of Parliament from West Bengal Andaman and Nicobar Islands and Sikkim in Calcutta. The following decisions were taken at the meeting:

1. Calcutta Telephones will start limited mobility service based on WLL Technology from August 2001. Initially the service will be introduced for the peripheral areas like Barasat Joka and Chandannagar. The services will be gradually expanded to cover the entire city within this financial year.

2. Cellular Mobile Service of Calcutta Telephones will be commercially launched from December 2001 at affordable rate.

3. More than 100 multi-storied buildings will be connected by optical fiber during this financial year extending the scope of Broadband Services. Bandwidth required for business industry, software houses etc. can be provided on demand with very high reliability. 20 buildings including Writers Building, Calcutta Stock Exchange, National Stock Exchange, Oberoi Grand Hotel, Bengal Ambuja Housing, Hindustan Times, Hindustan Levers and Wipro are connected by optical fiber.

4. Telephone bill presentation will be made available in Kolkata on Internet (www.calcuttatelephones.com) from 1st week of July 2001. This will be free service but subscribers will have to make a registration through Internet. Bills of last one year with STD details can be seen on the net. Bill payment through Internet will be implemented by October 2001. For the entire West Bengal the facility will be made available before the end of the current financial year.

5. West Bengal Circle will start commissioning Village Public Telephone facility based on WLL technology from August 2001. 72 Base Stations will be installed gradually for covering all revenue villages of West Bengal. Installation at Kharagpur and SDCAs of Midnapore will start from the first week of July 2001.

6. ISDN service has been introduced in major industrial towns and district headquarters of West Bengal and Sikkim. The rental and call charges have been halved. Any subscriber making more than 10000 calls per month need not pay rental charges.

7. Broadband services are available in major industrial towns and district headquarters of West Bengal. The broadband requirement of WBSWAN (the e- governance project of West Bengal) has been provided. 10 District Headquarters have been already connected.

8. 18 Internet nodes are operational in West Bengal and Sikkim. Service is available at local call rate.

9. Commercial operations will be computerized in all SSAs of West Bengal in this financial year. All commercial information like information for new connection shifting etc. will be instantly available from a number of places.

10. All billing and accounting operations will be computerized and billing related information will be available on Integrated Voice Response System (IVRS) in this financial year.

11. Entire Directory information of West Bengal Circle will be published on a CD by the end of July 2001. A complimentary copy of the same will be made available to the Sanchar Dhabas and Departmental Internet PCOs.

12. A Toll-free complaint booking number 1094 has been made functional for receiving complaints at Circle level from entire West Bengal.
