NITISH KUMAR VISITS RAILWAY COLONIES



New Delhi~ June 27, 2001


The Minister for Railways Shri Nitish Kumar visited a number of colonies of the railway employees situated near Delhi and New Delhi stations with a view to get a first hand account of the living conditions and the civic problems faced by these employees. Local Member of Parliament Shri Vijay Kumar Goel and senior officials of the Northern Railway accompanied him. The Minister disclosed that after the Gujrat earthquake the Railways have decided to build all future structures and buildings with earthquake proof specifications. He said that since Delhi comes under Zone 4 it has been decided that all the railway buildings in the area should be thoroughly examined and efforts made to strengthen them accordingly.

Referring to the various problems of water and electricity shortage including those of proper maintenance in the railway colonies the Minister said that necessary instructions are being issued to the concerned officials to look into these. However the Minister said that formation of Resident Welfare Associations in these colonies and inculcating a sense of better citizenship will also go a long way in proper upkeep and maintenance of the colonies. He assured that cooperation of the local civic authorities will be ensured through appropriate cooperation. On this occasion Shri Vijay Kumar Goel assured full cooperation and support to the Railways in solving various problems relating to civic amenities and better living conditions in the railway colonies.
