INDIA PROPOSES C-DOT EXCHANGES FOR MEXICO

New Delhi ~ July 9, 2001

A delegation of representatives of the Commission of Communication of the Chamber of Deputies (Lower House) from Mexico called on the Minister of Communications Shri Ram Vilas Paswan here today. The visiting delegation appreciated the rapid strides made by Indian telecom sector and evinced interest to know about the major initiatives taken by India. The Minister gave an overview of the telecom scene in India. He told the delegation that India has already proposed use of C-DOT exchanges and C-DOT TDMA PMP to provide telephone connections in rural areas of Mexico i.e. localities having less than 500 population. The delegation made queries on spectrum management foreign investment and privatisation of the telecom sector. The queries also covered creation of funds for Universal Service Obligation (USO) and privatisation of the Government operator. The delegation was fully apprised of the various initiatives taken by India on these issues.

While the Mexican delegation comprised of Mr. Jesus Orozco Alfaro, Mr. Francisco Javier Sanchez Campuzano, Mr. Alonso Ulloa Velez and Mr. Fernando Espinoza, the Indian side was represented by Shri Shyamal Ghosh, Chairman - Telecom Commission, Shri C.V. Rajan, Member(T), Shri R.N. Goyal, Member(P), Shri Ramanathan, Member (F), Shri Dhanendra Kumar, Additional Secretary (T) and Shri A.S. Bansal, CMD - TCIL.
