New Delhi ~ July 11, 2001

A total of 93 Fast Track Courts have started functioning during the first quarter ending June 2001 in Maharashtra. Eleven such courts had started functioning from April 3 2001. The Mumbai High Court has prepared a scheme for establishing 134 courts in the first phase. The total number of Fast Track Courts to be established in Maharashtra is 187. Seventy-nine judicial officers have been posted by promotion as presiding officers of the Fast Track Courts from senior judicial officers of the State and 14 are retired Additional District and Sessions Judges. So far 237 long pending cases including Sessions cases have been disposed of by these courts at Nasik, Ahmed Nagar, Aurangabad and Pune. There are some teething problems in the functioning of Fast Track Courts like arrangement of separate public prosecutors quick process service by the police and better logistic support to courts. These matters are being taken up by the Chief Justice of the Mumbai High Court with the Chief Minister of the State. In Maharashtra 187 Fast Track Courts have been sanctioned by the Government of India under the 11th Finance Commission Scheme. A sum of Rs. 54.08 crore has been earmarked for the State of Maharasthra for setting up and maintenance of these courts during 2000-2005. So far Rs. 16.31 crores has been released to the Government of Maharashtra in this regard.
