LAW ON WOMEN'S PROPERTY RIGHTS

New Delhi ~ July 23, 2001

The property rights of women are governed by the Hindu Succession Act 1956, Indian Succession Act 1925 and the other personal laws relating to different communities. As far as the property rights of the Hindu women are concerned a report from the Law Commission of India (174th Report) was received and the Government has written to all the State Governments and Union Territory Administrations eliciting their views in the matter.

A number of State Governments and Union Territory Administrations have responded to the letter written by the Government and the Government will take a view in the matter after all or most of the State Governments/Union Territory Administrations send their comments.

This information was given by the Minister of Law Justice and Company Affairs and Shipping Shri Arun Jaitley in a written reply to a question from Shri K. Rama Mohan Rao in the Rajya Sabha today.
