INFINITE GROWTH IN A FINITE WORLD COULD LEAD TO CONFLICTS CAUTIONS DR. JOSHI
New Delhi ~ July 24, 2001
The Minister for Human Resource Development and Science and Technology Dr. Murli Manohar Joshi has said that infinite growth in a finite world could
lead to conflicts and violence unless steps are taken in the direction of sustainable consumption along with sustainable development. Excessive
consumption and growth in the rich countries at the cost of poor nations cannot continue for long. He urged UNESCO to focus its attention on this
to help reduce the widening gap between the wealthy and poor nations. Dr. Joshi said this while presiding over a special lecture organised by the Indian National Science Academy on "Science For The 21st Century : Building A New Social Contract" here yesterday. The lecture was delivered by Mr. Koichiro Matsuura Director General of the United Nations Educational Scientific and Cultural Organisation (UNESCO) who is currently on a visit to India. Emphasising the need for a balanced growth and equitable distribution of the natural wealth.
