FOUNDATION STONE LAID FOR JABALPUR AIRPORT

New Delhi ~ July 19, 2001

The Civil Aviation Minister Shri Sharad Yadav has said that the Airport Authority of India has planned to spend Rs. 100 crore for the development of the airports in Madhya Pradesh. He was speaking at the Bhoomi Poojan and Foundation Stone laying ceremony for construction of New Terminal Building at Jabalpur today. In Jabalpur they have already spent about Rs. 12 crore for strengthening of the runway. It is now estimated that a total expenditure of Rs. 20 crore more will be incurred on Jabalpur airport towards various development works such as a New Terminal Building, Apron, Car parking Area etc. The airports which have been recently developed/upgraded in the State are Bhopal Indore and Khajuraho and a sum of Rs. 30 crore has been spent by the Airport Authority. Shri Yadav said that Airports Authority of India and Government are continuously engaged in this exercise to grow to the expectations of the people in conformity with the global awareness in the filed of aviation. To accelerate the process of development of aviation Government has formulated a new Aviation Policy to attract private participation for the development of airports and aviation activities in the country.

As a step in that direction four international airports at Delhi, Mumbai, Kolkata and Chennai are proposed to be leased to private parties for passenger and cargo operations on specified terms and conditions. The development of airports in the country is a continuous process and the airports authority of India had spent around Rs. 400 crore during the last financial year and this year they are set to spend around Rs. 600 crore. State-of-the-art technology radar systems have been installed at Calcutta, Chennai, Trivandrum, Hyderabad, Ahmedabad, Nagpur, Guwahati, Mangalore and Varanasi airports as a step to strengthen the Air Traffic Control Management network on various air routes to enhance safety factor of aircrafts operations the Minister added.
