PUBLIC RELATIONS ESSENTIAL FOR PROJECTING HEALTHY PROFILE OF THE ORGANISATION

New Delhi ~ July 19, 2001

Today image building exercises have become very crucial for projecting a healthy profile of the organization. The cooperatives in India have emerged as a vibrant sector of the Indian economy. National Coooperative Union of India represent 210 million cooperators. There is a need to highlight the achievements of the cooperatives in a forceful manner to project their positive image. This was stated by Dr. S.S Sisodia President NCUI on the occasion of the National Workshop on "Public Relations: Key for Success of Cooperatives in the Present Era" here today.

Dr. Sisodia said that the cooperative movement in India has carved out a niche for itself in important sectors like credit banking sugar, fertilizers, dairy, agriculture, marketing, consumer, handloom and handicrafts, fisheries, labour and housing activities. He said the time has come to treat public relations as the top priority of cooperative organization and that there is a requirement of skilled PR functionaries to handle the manifold responsibilities. He said that public relations should emerge as a specialized field of activity in the cooperative organisations. Proposal for starting a national feature cell and the daily newspaper may also be given a serious consideration. A conducive atmosphere for cooperative development has to be created in the society for which PR officials can be most effective communicators he added.

Chairman NAFED Shri Ajit Kumar said that it must be ensured that good work done by the cooperative sector gets highlighted through media and that negative propaganda is countered in a proper way.

The keynote address was given by Shri Venu Wadgaonkar, General Manager, NABARD. The Chairman/Managing Directors Public Relation Officers from various national level cooperative federations and public relation officers of various state cooperative unions participated in the workshop.
