DR. JOSHI LEFT FOR PORTUGAL AND BRAZIL IN A BID TO EXPAND SCIENTIFIC COOPERATION

New Delhi ~ July 6, 2001

The Minister for Human Resource Development and Science and Technology Dr. Murli Manohar Joshi left New Delhi this morning on a two-day visit to Portugal followed by a 4-day tour of Brazil. This is in a bid to expand and strengthen scientific collaboration with Portugal and Brazil. The Indian delegation among others includes : Prof. V.S. Ramamurthy Secretary, Department of Science and Technology; Dr. Harsh Gupta, Secretary - Department of Ocean Development; Prof. Goverdhan Mehta, President of Indian National Science Academy and well-known bio-scientist Prof. P.N. Tandon.

In Lisbon Dr. Joshi will have detailed discussions with his Portuguese counterpart and sign a programme of co-operation in Science and Technology. The two sides will decide on the areas of collaboration from which both countries can benefit. The two sides will also be signing a Memorandum of Understanding in Ocean Sciences. In Brasilia Dr. Joshi will have discussions with the Brazilian Minister for Science and Technology Mr. Ronaldo Mota Sardenberg and find ways and means of increasing scientific co-operation between the two sides. The discussions would mainly concentrate on co-operation in bio-technology in which both the countries are quite advanced and then sign a Memorandum of Co-operation after identifying the areas. Dr. Joshi is scheduled to address the Brazilian Academy of Sciences in Rio de Janeiro. He will also visit the National Laboratory for Scientific Computation at Petropolis.
