New Delhi ~ July 17, 2001

A meeting of the State Secretaries in charge of Tribal Development and Directors of Tribal Research Institutes functioning in various States was convened here recently. The meeting was inaugurated by the Union Minister for Tribal Affairs Shri Jual Oram. He reviewed the working and general performance of Tribal Institutes and the follow-up action on various points arising out of the meeting held in May last year. The meeting also discussed the Action Plan of the Institutes for 2001-2002 and the measures required to be taken for strengthening the organisational set up of the Institutes to bring about perceptible improvement in their functioning.

The meeting also discussed in depth the ways and means of ameliorating the plight of Primitive Tribal Groups (PTGs) in the country and the steps required to be taken to achieve all round development of these groups so as to bring them on par with other tribals.

The urgent need for drawing up time-bound programmes for the development of PTGs and implementation of the programmes already approved by the Central Government were impressed on the representatives of the State Governments.
