INTERNATIONAL YEAR OF VOLUNTEERS HAS INFUSED URGENCY IN VOLUNTARY COMMITMENT FOR OUR YOUTH
New Delhi - December 5, 2001

Minister for Youth Affairs and Sports Sushree Uma Bharti said that there are 17.56 lakh student volunteers nearly 8 million non-student rural youth volunteers and 5400 national service volunteers who are working in various development programmes in the areas of literacy, health promotion, drug de-addiction etc. Another volunteer oriented special scheme National Reconstruction Corps has been initiated this year. Under this scheme 80,000 volunteers are working on projects related to Swaranjyanti Gram, Swarojgar Yojana, National Anti-Malaria Programme, Swaranjyanti Shahri, Rojgar Yojana, Integrated Watershed Development Programme, Renewable Energy System, Social Forestry and Promotion of Literacy she added.

Sushree Uma Bharti further said that the celebration of the International Year of Volunteers has infused a new sense of voluntary commitment on the part of our youth volunteers and in fact on the part of our countrymen to the cause of the nation. She was speaking on the occasion of the release of a Commemorative Postage Stamp on International Year of Volunteers here today.

The Stamp is in the denomination of Rs. 4/-. The year 2001 was designated as the International Year of Volunteers by the United Nations General Assembly in its 52nd Session. The objectives of the International Year of Volunteers are - increased recognition and facilitation of volunteers networking through different media for wider publicity and promotion of volunteers and their activities. Designation of an International Year of Volunteers has provided a valuable framework and established a favourable environment for the growth and more strategic use of voluntary contributions. It is hoped that this initiative will generate enough awareness to ensure that the Year extends beyond Governments and the UN to touch all sectors of society.
