CNG SUPPLY IN DELHI



New Delhi ~ July 31, 2001


Shri Santosh Kumar Gangwar, Minister of State for Petroleum & Natural Gas informed the Rajya Sabha in a written reply today that the sale of CNG (Compressed Natural Gas) in Delhi as on 1st July 2001 was around 1.85 lakh Kg. per day against an installed capacity of 2.15 lakh Kg. Per day. The Minister further informed that the Indraprastha Gas Limited (IGL) has taken several steps to further enhance the supply of CNG in Delhi. Orders have been placed for higher capacity compressors. The total CNG stations would be increased to 87 by September 2001 and to 120 by March 2002 from the current 72 locations. The existing 39 daughter-stations are proposed to be upgraded to daughter-booster-stations progressively by December 2001. Action has also been initiated to lay 23 km long gas pipeline connecting Dhaula Kuan with GT Karnal Road. In addition to the above 50 retail outlets have been identified for co-locating CNG dispensing facility.

In reply to other questions Shri Gangwar said that the Ministry of Petroleum Natural Gas has taken a stand before the Hon'ble Supreme Court that unleaded and low benzene petrol and diesel with 0.05 per cent maximum sulphur content also satisfies the criteria of clean fuel. As such vehicles may be allowed to run on these fuels in addition to CNG. These quality of fuels are already being supplied in Delhi.

Shri Gangwar also informed the House that many transport organisations namely Indian Tourists Transporters' Association, Delhi Contract Bus Association, Delhi Transport Corporation DTC Private Bus Operators Welfare Association Indian Association of Tour Operators have made representations to the Environment Pollution (Prevention & Control) Authority for National Capital Region (NCR) in favour of using diesel of maximum 0.05 per cent sulphur content. Replying to another query the Minister said that there was one incident of blast of CNG cylinder at Delhi on 6th April 2001 due to use of spurious cylinder. Subsequent to this safety measures such as physical verification and logging details of vehicles and of CNG cylinder numbers have been started.
