In view of the huge backlog of more than two crore pending cases in the district and subordinate courts these 1734 additional courts to be known as fast track courts are expected to expedite disposal of long pending cases priority being given to sessions cases and cases involving undertrials in jails considering that about two lakh undertrial prisoners were languishing in jails. These courts are being set up by State Governments in consultation with the respective High Courts. The apex court is also being kept informed. These courts will continue till March 2005. Each court is expected to dispose of 14 sessions cases or 25 other criminal and civil cases per month. It is expected that fast track courts will dispose of about two million cases by the year 2005. |
