INDIGENOUS PRODUCTION OF HITHERTO IMPORTED `XANTHAN GUM'



New Delhi ~ August 9, 2001


Commercially very useful industrially important hitherto imported `Xanthan Gum' is to be produced indigenously soon. The Gum is a bacterial product meant for use in food pharma and industrial sectors besides in oil drilling industry for the enhancement of crude recovery. The compound a bacterial polysaccharide is widely used for value addition. It is estimated that the demand for the gum in the country at present is around 300 tonnes per annum. It will prove to be an important import-substitute in the near future when Shriram Biotech Ltd. starts its production to its fullest capacity. The technology for the production of Xanthan Gum has been developed by the Birla Institute of Scientific Research, Jaipur with the support of the Department of Biotechnology (DBT)

Ministry of Science and Technology. The technology was formally transferred to Shriram Biotech Ltd. Hyderabad yesterday for bulk production. The DBT is the licenser of the technology and has authorised the Birla Institute to enter into an agreement for the transfer of the technology to enable Shriram Biotech to set up a manufacturing plant for the indigenous production of Xanthan Gum. The Secretary DBT Dr. Manju Sharma present at the signing of the agreement said DBT will continue to encourage scientists to convert research leads into products processes and technologies to promote the biotech industry in the country. She said development of technologies that can substitute imports is essential particularly in the context of the WTO regime.
