SRI LANKA FISHERIES MINISTER CALLS ON SHRI NITISH KUMAR

A delegation of senior officers led by Sri Lanka Minister of Fisheries & Aquatic
Resources Development Mr. Mahinda Rajapakse called on Shri Nitish Kumar
Union Agriculture and Railways Minister here today and discussed matters of mutual interest &
cooperation in the field of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources development.
Expressing concern on shooting incidents on innocent Indian fishermen by Sri
Lanka Naval guards Shri Nitish Kumar informed that six incidents of firing took place
during the year 2000 and four shooting incidents have taken place during the current
year. He informed Sri Lanka Minister that innocent fishermen cross international
waterways without knowing the exact limits and in chase of a good catch. India on the
other hand only takes Sri Lankan fishermen into custody without resorting to firing.
Srilankan Minister assured Shri Nitish Kumar positive action in the matter on his return
and informed that already he has instructed Sri Lankan Navy not to resort to shooting.
It was decided that officers accompanying Sri Lanka Minister will hold discussion
with the officials of Animal Husbandry & Fishery Department. Ministry of Agriculture
Government of India here today to sort out the problems being faced by both the
countries in this matter. It was also decided to have meetings of coastal guards of both
the countries and adopt measures for achieving mutual confidence & cooperation.
