SRILANKAN JUSTICE MINISTER CALLS ON INDIAN LAW MINISTER
New Delhi ~ June 25 2001
The Srilankan Minister of Justice HE Batty Weerakoon called on the Union Minister of Law Justice and Company Affairs and Shipping Shri Arun Jaitley here today and discussed with him measures for a better coordination between the Judiciary of the two nations. Both the Ministers gave an overview of their respective judicial system and the steps being taken for expeditious disposal of cases in each other's countries.
The Srilankan Justice Minister sought the cooperation of the Indian Government for computerisation of their courts so that the litigating public could
know the listing of cases and judgements proceedings as well as file cases online as has been done in the Supreme Court and the High Courts in India. In this connection the Indian Law Minister assured his Srilankan counterpart of all help stating that he would direct National Informatics Centre (NIC) to provide all necessary cooperation to Sri Lanka. The Srilanakan Minster stated that a delegation of his Ministry would soon visit India to get a project appraisal so that a blue print could be prepared for expeditious computerisation of courts in Sri Lanka.
The Meeting between the two Ministers was held in a cordial atmosphere and lasted about half an hour.
