GLOBALISATION SHOULD LEAD TO INTERDEPENDENCE AND NOT SIMPLY TO UNBRIDLED COMPETITION AMONG NATIONS SAY INDIA AND PHILIPPINES

Geneva ~ June 09 2001

India and the Philippines have urged that globolisation process should lead to more inter-dependence among nations rather than having just unbridled competition. The call was made at a bilateral meeting between Labour Minister Dr. Satyanarayan Jatiya and his Philippines counterpart Ms. Patricia A. Stopomas who has been elected as the Chairperson of the 89th International Labour Conference of ILO currently on in Geneva. Ms. Stopomas supported Dr. Jatiya's view that movement of labour should be accorded the same kind of freedom as enjoyed by the capital. Dr. Jatiya said the need of the hour was to generate employment for which training and skill upgradation of the labour force was necessary. He said that developing countries should cooperate to ensure that the ILO helps them in areas of employment and training. Refering to the Decent Work concept Dr. Jatiya said that it should be in accordance with the local conditions prevailing in each country. He apprised Ms Stopomas of various initiatives being taken in India for the advancement and welfare of workers. He referred in particular to the insurance and pension scheme announced in May 2001 for millions of agricultural workers.

The Philippines Minister said that she had been advising the developed countries to have more patience as it is not easy for developing countries to improve labour standards. Ms Stopomas expressed admiration for the progress made by India in Information Technology and Bio-technology sectors.

Dr. Jatiya congratulated Ms. Stopomas for her election as Chairperson of the International Labour Conference. The two Ministers said that India and Philippines face almost similar problems in labour sector and expressed desire to continue exchange of views on labour issues.
