The Indian Science Congress Association presented noted social scientist Virendar M. Trehan the 'Presidential Gold Medal Award' at the inaugural ceremony of the 95th Indian Science Congress being held at Andhra University, Visakhapatnam today.

Visakhapatnam... 3 January 2008: The Indian Science Congress Association presented noted social scientist Virendar M. Trehan the "Presidential Gold Medal Award" at the inaugural ceremony of the 95th Indian Science Congress being held at Andhra University, Visakhapatnam today. Mr. Trehan was bestowed with this honour for his significant and lifetime contribution to the development of Science and Technology in the country. The Award was presented by Dr. Manmohan Singh, Hon'ble Prime Minister of India during the inaugural ceremony. Virendar Mohan Trehan, 64, a well known social scientist and Chairman of the New Delhi headquartered Mekaster Group, is the only social scientist selected for the award. About 2500 scientists, delegates, researchers including several Nobel laurets from abroad attended the function. The Indian Science Congress brings together scientists both from India and abroad for mutual interaction in the cause of scientific advancement and to promote development.

Commenting on the award conferred on him Mr. Trehan said, "This is the first time that I have been encouraged on a national platform by the oldest autonomous body of our country, which is

recognized and highly regarded by the Scientific Community and by the Government of India. I take this as a prestigious moment in my life and pledge to continue devoting my full might towards the cause of Scientific Development and Social Integration in our Nation."

Mr. Trehan said that the award is a recognition for the things he did for fostering Science & Technology in India, with an emphasis on the benefit to man and society and to alleviate the scientific temper. He said that the award will further propel him into doing more for the benefit of the society.

Mr. Trehan played a key role in the development of Science and Technology. He devoted lot of time propagating Science. In pursuit of this cause, he was responsible for ushering in the Digital Switching System in India, an important milestone in the history of Indian Telecom. And that marks an important phase of Indian Telecommunications and has opened the doors for development of telecommunications in the country.

Further, he was instrumental in setting up National Telematics Forum(NTF), which played a major role in formulating the National Telecom Policy. Subsequently he was a Member of Advisory Panel of Telecommunications of the Planning Commission.

A multifaceted personality and an entrepreneur with a difference. Mr. Trehan has been bestowed upon with several Honours, Awards and Fellowship for his excellent services to the Nation. Mr. Trehan is a well known figure, nationally and internationally in the field of Trade and Commerce being the promoter and Chairman of Mekaster Group of Companies, well established name in the field of Manufacturing, Construction, Petrochemicals, Refineries etc. as well as International Trading.

As a member of FICCI Joint Business Council, International Chamber of Commerce and Indo-American Chamber of Commerce, Mr. Trehan accompanied the Prime Minister of India to Japan and France, besides being part of several other delegations to Holland, Spain, Portugal and USA.

He has been a Member of Advisory Panel of Telecommunications of the Planning Commission and presided over and attended the International Telecommunication Union Conference in Geneva,

International Computers & Communications (I. C. & C) Conference in Sydney and Paris, being a sole invitee from India, interacting with ECC countries delegates and also attended several World Economic Forum meeting/s in Davos, Switzerland.

Mr. Trehan, being aware of his social obligations, has been working for Amity, Peace and Harmony for the entire Fraternity and for the said purposes founded a Non Governmental Organizations (NGO) - Foundation for Amity and National Solidarity (FANS) which has also been bestowed upon various Awards promoting the cause of National Integration. FANS founded in December 1984, promotes the spirit of national integration, communal harmony and fraternity, Mr. Trehan took every pain to refurbish the religious fabric and communal harmony.

Recognising the fact that the true strength of India lives in the villages, Mr. Treha formed an organization, Hindustani Panchayat Sangathan. Through a mass contact programme at the village and block level the organisation is trying to create awareness about the strength of Panchayati Raj. To re-establish the original ancient values of Indian culture and tradition, and to spread the true message of religion, Mr. Trehan has formed the Bhartiya Dharma Prachar Parishad.

Mr. Virendar Mohan Trehan, is an entrepreneur with a difference. Mekaster, established by Mr. Trehan is a familiar name in the areas of Industrial hand Tools, Global Trading and Manufacturing Engineering Equipments. Due to his passion for import substitution, he successfully developed a number of products in small scale sector.

Mr. Trehan has been the President of Indian Association for Productivity, Quality & Reliability which is affiliated with International Statistical Institute. He was honoured by Institution of Electronics and Telecommunication Engineers (IETE) and presented special memento for the valuable services rendered by him for the growth of telecommunication in the country.

He has been bestowed with several honours and awards for his excellent services in the development of telecom and science & technology. Recently, recognising his valuable contribution in promoting the cause of science & technology in the country, the Punjab Academy of Sciences conferred Honorary Fellowship on him.

The 95th Indian Science Congress is being held from 3rd to 7th January 2008 at Andhra University, Visakhapatnam with the focal theme - "Knowledge Based Society Using Environmentally Sustainable Science And Technology". The Indian Science Congress Association (ISCA) started in 1914 is a premier scientific institution established primarily for the purpose of providing a common platform to Indian scientists, engineers and technologists of all categories and belonging to different disciplines for sharing expertise and experience. An autonomous body ISCA is funded by the Department of Science and Technology, Government of India. The objective of the association is to advance and promote the cause of science in India and popularize the same.
