NGO Lifetime Achievement Awards for Dr. Kurien

Anand, Gujarat, India

Dr. V. Kurien, Father of the White Revolution in India and former Chairman of the Gujarat Co-operative Milk Marketing Federation Ltd. was conferred the prestigious Karmaveer Puraskaar for lifetime achievement by iCONGO-Khemka Foundation at an impressive ceremony held at Rajghat, New Delhi on Saturday. The Karmaveer awards recognize individuals who have led social change by going against the tide and taking stands by and speaking out with pro-active involvement and interest for addressing social issues.

Dr. Kurien receives this award for his exemplary work to promote cooperative dairying through Amul, creating wealth for communities, the empowerment of women and for keeping the most vulnerable at the center of development. Today, the Amul model has impacted the lives of more than 12 million farmers across the country. India's largest food products marketing organization in the country - The Gujarat Co- operative Milk Marketing Federation with a turnover of over Rs. 4000 crores has been created. By placing procurement, processing and marketing in the hands of the milk producers Amul has ensured that the greatest share of the consumers' rupee flows back to the farmers. The story of Dr. Kurien and Amul is the story of an institution builder, the institutions that have been built, the impact of these institutions on the people and the endeavours to secure the future of these institutions. It is the story of how genuine leadership can bring about meaningful and sustainable development in our society.

The Indian Confederation of NGOs - iCONGO was established in December 2004 to create a movement of socially responsible and caring citizens of India who would like to right every wrong by being drivers of change. The governing council comprises eminent personalities like Dr. M. S. Swaminathan, Shri Dipak Parekh, Shri Ratan Tata, Shri Keshav Mahinder and Shri J. J. Irani. The Khemka Foundation is an Indian public charitable trust with the mission to develop and promote institutions and initiatives that make a substantial impact on poverty, deprivation and disempowerment of the human and natural environment.
