Dr. V. Kurien, Father of the White Revolution in India and former Chairman of the Gujarat Co-operative Milk Marketing Federation Ltd. was conferred the prestigious Karmaveer Puraskaar for lifetime achievement by iCONGO-Khemka Foundation at an impressive ceremony held at Rajghat, New Delhi on Saturday. The Karmaveer awards recognize individuals who have led social change by going against the tide and taking stands by and speaking out with pro-active involvement and interest for addressing social issues.
Dr. Kurien receives this award for his exemplary work to promote cooperative dairying through Amul, creating wealth for communities, the empowerment of women and for keeping the most vulnerable at the center of development. Today, the Amul model has impacted the lives of more than 12 million farmers across the country. India's largest food products marketing organization in the country - The Gujarat Co- operative Milk Marketing Federation with a turnover of over Rs. 4000 crores has been created. By placing procurement, processing and marketing in the hands of the milk producers Amul has ensured that the greatest share of the consumers' rupee flows back to the farmers.
