Increasing End Users Spur Demand for General Purpose Test and Measurement Equipment in China

Mumbai, Maharashtra, India

Robust growth of communication equipment industry and network providers is triggering substantial demand for test and measurement products in China. In addition, increasing investments in the aerospace, military, and defense industries are also enhancing opportunities in homeland security, radar communications networks, aircraft and fighter planes, and this is likely to boost revenues for test equipment vendors.

New analysis from Frost & Sullivan (http://www.testandmeasurement.frost.com), Chinese General Purpose Test & Measurement Equipment Markets, finds that the market earned revenues of $370.2 million in 2005, and estimates this to reach $684.6 million in 2012.

"Increasing investments made in the end-user markets and relocations of manufacturing facilities to China are driving the demand for the general purpose test and measurement equipment." says Frost & Sullivan Research Analyst David Ren. "With the end-user industries showing tremendous growth potential not only in terms of revenues but also technological advancements, China is rapidly becoming the 'factory of the world' for a wide variety of electronic and communication equipment."

The opportunities for generating revenues are also expanding for test equipment manufacturers and service providers, who constantly evolve their products and services to match the developments of communications industry. In addition, the investments made in the aerospace, military, and defense industries are likely to substantially increase revenues for the vendors. Furthermore, to take advantage of lower production costs, and thereby remain competitive, test and measurement manufacturers are relocating their manufacturing in China.

However, growth prospects in the test measurement market are not without its challenges. For instance, as research and development is fast improving test equipment technology, end users are demanding better price to performance ratio with lower profit margins for the vendors. Moreover, investors in communication industries are reluctant to invest in competing technologies that lack proven track record, and this is restraining the growth of test equipment markets.

"There is increasing pressure on test equipment manufacturers to make available test instruments with high functionality for lower prices" says Ren. "In addition, since costs in introducing newer technology are enormous, investors do not prefer to risk their investments on technologies that are unlikely to succeed in the market."

For test and measurement equipment vendors to overcome these challenges and to optimize revenue generation, they need to devise tactical strategies. For instance, adopting a stratified pricing strategy by categorizing its products across two or three price tiers would help attract different target customers. In addition, test and measurement equipment vendors need to work closely with the communications and electronics industries in identifying the needs of the market, and to keep pace with the trends that are affecting this business.
