Lifestyle Changes and Safety Issues Influence Usage Patterns of Emulsifiers in Personal Care Products

Mumbai, Maharashtra, India

An improved economic environment and constantly changing consumer lifestyles are contributing to the increased production of personal care products. This will have a positive effect on the uptake of emulsifiers that are an important constituent of most personal care products.

Frost & Sullivan (http://www.chemicalsandmaterials.frost.com) finds that the European Market for Emulsifiers in Personal Care earned revenues of €259.7 million in 2005 and estimates this to reach €420.6 million in 2012.

"Despite the upbeat projections, mounting concerns over the possible carcinogenic effects of emulsifiers in personal care products are posing a challenge," notes Frost & Sullivan Research Analyst Mahesh Kumar. "Consequently, the rising speculation over the use of ethoxylates in personal care products has been paralleled by a growing preference for eco-friendly and natural solutions."

Currently, however, alternative solutions to ethoxylate emulsifiers in most personal care products tend to be expensive, besides posing difficulties in formulation. The low-volume utilisation of these alternatives makes these products highly expensive.

"Low volume utilisation of alternative solutions in personal care products ushers in higher cost per unit," explains Mr. Kumar. "Fierce competition in this market is, moreover, deterring formulators from shifting to these solutions."

To succeed, emulsifier manufacturers will need to intensify their focus on product innovation in order to supply effective alternative solutions and expand the base of emulsifier varieties.

"Emulsifier manufacturers should collaborate with formulators to produce cost-effective solutions that enhance performance while exhibiting multiple properties," advises Mr. Kumar. "This will encourage formulators to minimise the use of other additives while experimenting with their end products. "
