Principals' Mindstorming to Change Students' Mindset at Rai Foundation

New Delhi, Delhi, India

"Our Students, their Mindset and the Competitive World" was the topic of second national school principal meet held on January 19, 2007 at Rai Foundation, Delhi. The principle speakers at the meet were Ms. Robin Di'olo, First Secretary, Cultural Affairs, US Embassy, Dr Ankita Batla, Strategic Planner, McCann Erickson, and Dr Sharad Chandra, Sr. Psychiatrist, Moolchand Hospital. Also, Heads and senior representatives of several schools from Delhi, NCR and other neighboring cities were present. The meet began with the opening remark of Rai Foundation's president Mr. Vinay Rai. Thanking all the participants for taking some time out from their busy schedules Mr. Rai said, "Winning agenda is there in mind so mindset requires complete overhaul."

Ms. Diolo shared her vast experience as diplomat in India. She compared history, culture and education system of the two countries. She said that American students get liberty and creative freedom. The questioning spirit is promoted among children there. The freedom to ask questions and create things afresh produces fearless risk takers in the American society. She further added that the U.S. traditionally, is a land of risk takers inhabited by migrants who'd no fear of unknown and who dared to go beyond the known.

This discourse was followed by Ms Batla's inspiring lecture. Her career is a tale of phenomenal academic and professional success. Delving into memory lanes she explained her transformation from a qualified doctor to strategic advisor, McCann Erickson. She stressed on the importance of listening to one's heart. She said that success is not just getting a good job or great money it's about satisfaction of achieving one's goals and fulfilling one's dreams.

In the brainstorming session Principals expressed their deep concerns about the overall development of the personality of the students. They emphasized that students should be given directions in accordance with their strengths instead of being herded in a direction, which is not their choice. Ms. Nirmala Devi, Reader Political Science, Kamla Nehru College, focused on the importance of empowering girl child through quality education. Most of the principals expressed the need of introducing a subject, which educates students to find their inherent qualities. Ms. Savita Sengar, Delhi Head Rai Foundation, informed them that colleges under RF have a mandatory subject called Life Skills that takes care of these issues. The conclusions are tough on any such discussion but the requirement for change and need to nurture the inherent qualities of the students were the points of agreement.
