Indian Refrigerator by Futuring Design Wins Acclaim

Mumbai, Maharashtra, India

Designed by Futuring Design for the consumer giant Godrej & Boyce, the Eon refrigerator made especially for the Indian consumer won the Design Excellence Award 2006.

Design is often misunderstood to be the prerogative of the West. Futuring Design recently laid such thinking to rest by designing the Eon refrigerator to address specific Indian usage & needs. The award winning range was lauded not just for the innovations developed but also for how the benefit was cued through design.

" In a market dominated by meaningless technical buzzwords, we were convinced that any technology or innovation that the new range offered needed to be relevant and tangible...something that could be seen and touched, and most importantly, believed," said a Futuring Design spokesperson.

And that was exactly what they did. When designing Eon, Futuring developed innovations that specifically addressed Indian habits, and then reflected them visibly in the product.

Take the example of the new "Cool Shower" technology, one of the 7 innovations launched. Air vents for cooling are typically located at the rear refrigerator wall. When consumers place large vessels at the back, these vents are blocked, compromising cooling efficiency.

Rather than force a change of habit, Futuring re-designed technology to be more efficient around existing habits. So, in Eon's case the air moves out through the rear duct but is then redirected into a hollow shelf above the vessel, and finally showered out through the shelf onto the vessel below - cleverly avoiding the blockage.

So, cooling is obviously improved but one look at the translucent hollow shelf and you can understand why this was a great hit with the international jury. "...(the) innovative use of shelves for air distribution...was well thought out, reflected in the details and functionality," said the jury commending the design.
