More than ever, companies across the globe are depending on Information Technology to drive their business. With the expanding horizon of the cyber world and the explosive proliferation of cyber crime, there is always a serious concern about the safety of the digital assets. Large organizations have succeeded in setting up the first lines of defence, in some cases, many layers of defence to protect their digital assets. Most companies have made noteworthy efforts to protect themselves from malicious content and the highly dangerous hackers. However, IT-security continues to be a challenge for organizations across the world. Organizations need to keep abreast of newer threats that are capable of destroying their digital assets and secure data with deeper levels of security, layering access control and encryption based technologies on the most critical data. Identity theft, phishing and other online frauds are the order of the day and the situation gets murkier, tougher and more traumatic each day for organizations leveraging the online apparatus as hackers take the world to ransom
Confidence in using the Internet for business can only come with good security. Hackers, keen to tout their latest exploits, have played havoc with Internet services in the recent past. The information technology (IT) infrastructure of India, which is now vital for communication, commerce, and control of our physical infrastructure, is highly vulnerable to terrorist and criminal attacks. Lack of proper knowledge on this key issue, especially in a country like India where the use of the online apparatus is just gaining momentum, is exposing many organizations to potential security risk. Better education for users will help eradicate these threats and the real solution is not in technology alone. It is in people, best practices and effective training. A study conducted by the Department of Information Technology, has revealed that in the first half of 2006, India has been the favoured target for Internet hackers.
The analysis which was carried out by the Computer Emergency Response Team (Cert-In) that takes care of computer security-related incidents, has stated that in the first half till June 2006, a total of 1,752 Indian Web sites were defaced, of which 39 were ".gov.in" Websites. A huge amount of Indian top level domain sites - .co.in, .net.in, .gov.in, .org.in, .nic.in, .ernet.in, .ac.in, and .res.in - were defaced, with the commercial sector contributing to 68.3 percent of defacements, and the Government sector contributing to 27.3 percent of them. www.fmc.com, www.railnet.com, and www.ieg.com, were the three Indian government websites that were defaced on the VSNL network.
- With the private sector controlling the vast majority of the world's critical infrastructure systems that underpin our economy - from energy and telecommunications to financial services and healthcare - physical and economic security will depend on effective, global collaboration.
- Since so much of our critical infrastructure and economy is dependent on information networks, cyber security has assumed a new importance. Increasingly, there is no physical or economic security without effective cyber security.
